Presentation Overview
Rate Transient Analysis (RTA) is a practical and cost-effective method for identifying wells with untapped production potential. In this presentation, John Thompson will demonstrate how RTA leverages production data to diagnose wellbore and reservoir productivity issues by interpreting historical rate and pressure trends.
While RTA is commonly used by reservoir engineers as a forecasting tool, it also delivers significant value to production engineers. Attendees will learn how RTA can quantify the impact of changes in choke size and pump size, identify flow restrictions such as sand, and assess remediation opportunities through workovers.
Through real-world case studies, the presentation will highlight how RTA serves as a production optimization tool—providing “what-if” scenarios that help operators restore wells to their full potential. Ultimately, RTA creates a common language for reservoir and production engineers to collaboratively analyze well-reservoir system performance, unlock hidden reserves, accelerate cash flow, extend field life, and enhance performance across both free-flowing and artificially lifted wells.
About the Speaker
John M. Thompson is the President and Co-Founder of SAGA Wisdom, an innovative online training platform transforming technical education in the oil and gas industry. He holds a B.Sc. in Mining Engineering from Queen’s University and an M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Calgary.
Since 2009, John has specialized in Rate Transient Analysis, analyzing production data from thousands of wells across major tight and ultra-tight plays in the U.S., Canada, and Argentina. He has authored or co-authored 19 technical papers focused on production forecasting, stimulation effectiveness, well spacing and completions optimization, and diagnosing untapped production potential.
John previously served as Chair of the SPE Reservoir Evaluation and Production Optimization Special Interest Group in Calgary and received the SPE Canadian Regional Service Award for his contributions to the society.
