Methane Mitigation, Start with the Question!
Sponsored by ChampionX

Everyone seeks the silver bullet, a singular device capable of solving difficult problems. While methane mitigation is no easy feat, there are numerous providers who will suggest their widget is indeed the silver bullet. They claim the one and only technology will solve your methane problems. Unfortunately, that technology does not exist.
Satellites only see large leaks on clear days, OGI cameras require operators to visit the site making them cost prohibitive for catching leaks early. Continuous monitors can’t pinpoint the source. Although modest reductions are achievable with any device, maximizing the methane abated versus cost involves knowing how available tools fit together into a holistic methane reduction package.
This presentation will show existing detection options: planes, helicopters, drones, satellites, OGI cameras, and continuous monitoring and consider how to deploy these technologies in a way which achieves maximum benefit for the minimum cost. Finally, how can you construct a methane detection system that will answer your specific questions.

The Latest Hydrogen and CCS Developments and What They Mean for the Natural Gas Industry
Sponsored by Babst Calland

Hydrogen and carbon capture and sequestration have emerged as a potential solution to address unprecedented decarbonization demands from investors, customers and governments. The U.S. Department of Energy will soon be reviewing applications and awarding grants for regional Hydrogen Hubs, perhaps including one in Appalachia, while private industry continues to actively explore the generation of hydrogen and its use for industrial, transportation and other uses. Sequestering the carbon is a key component to the development and deployment of hydrogen as an energy source, particularly in our region. This session will provide the latest developments on the status of IIJA review and funding of hydrogen hubs, the generation of hydrogen and the market for off-takers, CO2 and hydrogen pipeline regulation and permitting, and primacy for UIC permitting of injection wells.

Carbon Sequestration and the Path to Commercialization
Sponsored by WSP Golder

Underground Injection Control (UIC) wells are designed to inject, dispose, and store injectates in the subsurface. Established methods to permit, design, operate, and monitor UIC wells have established a safe disposal and storage alternative for industry. To meet net-zero goals, these methods can be successfully implemented to insure the safe and secure long-term disposal through carbon capture and sequestration (CCS). The most successful projects will have to navigate and satisfy geologic feasibility, regulatory requirements, and commercial requisites. Geologic criteria include: (1) adequate upper confinement to protect the lowermost Underground Source of Drinking Water (USDW); (2) sufficient storage capacity to sequester the anticipated volume of CO2; and (3) identification and assessment of vertical migration pathways that could compromise permanent storage and potentially threaten the USDW. With geologic requirements satisfied, a stable regulatory framework can be established with advanced efforts to understand the local and state readiness along with early coordination with regulators and stakeholders. These pieces feed into the ever-evolving landscape of policy incentives and advancement of capture technology, making commercialization opportunities available for sustainable CCS programs.

Coming to a Town Near You: Local Government and the Environmental Rights Amendment
Sponsored by Manko, Gold, Katcher & Fox, LLP

This summer, Pennsylvania’s Commonwealth Court threw out Grant Township’s attempt to ban industry activity through the adoption of a Home Rule Charter. This program will provide an update on that case and other continuing efforts to restrict unconventional shale development throughout the Appalachian Basin through local government proceedings. In particular, the presentation will address attempts to use the Pennsylvania Environmental Rights Amendment at the local government level to limit and even ban industry activity. Come to this panel to hear from subject matter expert attorneys who are engaged in the Grant Township case, and other key participants, as they discuss these legal developments.

Transferred Emissions: New Pressures in the Energy Sector
Sponsored by Geosyntec Consultants, Inc.

For the oil and gas industry, the energy transition, ESG investing, and turbulent commodity prices have pushed and pulled business strategy over the past 5 years. Early on, companies eager to meet the energy transition expectations of their shareholders used divestment as a tool to rapidly decarbonize their asset portfolio. More recently, this concept of M&A activity as a way to meet corporate climate targets has caught the attention of investors and ENGOs/NGOs. As it has become apparent that transferred emissions may hamper macro energy transition goals, companies’ strategies need to evolve. In this session, the concept of transferred emissions will be covered broadly and we will offer actionable ways to build effective and credible tools.

Earning RSG Certification
Sponsored by Project Canary

Responsibly Sourced Gas” (or RSG) is a relatively new category of differentiated natural gas in the marketplace with a strong following. While third-party assessments are required to evaluate energy producers and provide certification, the right data plays a critical role in sustained differentiation. The steps operators take to certify their gas and understand what advantages certification provides in the natural gas marketplace.

Environmental Justice in Focus: Key Considerations for Shale Energy
Sponsored by Beveridge & Diamond PC

In recent years, environmental justice (EJ) has gained significant prominence among federal and state policymakers and regulators. It is a concept and movement that is not universally understood but is driving new regulation, policy, and permitting and enforcement decisions. Companies with shale-related infrastructure, including exploration, extraction, and pipelines, face various environmental justice risks. Seasoned environmental lawyers will discuss new legal and regulatory developments, emerging issues on the horizon, and risk mitigation strategies.

Pipeline Safety in the Biden Administration
Sponsored by Babst Calland

The Biden Administration has issued several significant pipeline safety rules since coming to office in January 2021, including new safety standards and reporting requirements for onshore gas gathering lines, as well as new valve installation and rupture detection standards for gas, hazardous liquid, and carbon dioxide pipelines. The Administration is also developing new rulemaking proposals to establish enhanced leak detection and repair requirements for gas pipelines and address other congressional mandates. These new rulemakings, along with the Administration’s focus on environmental issues, have impacted the regulatory landscape and policy priorities of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), the federal agency charged with administering the nation’s pipeline safety program. This session will cover recent developments in pipeline safety and discuss the potential challenges and opportunities that operators can expect during the Biden Administration.

Pump Theory Training: What Really Happens Inside a Pump Casing – A Systems Approach on Pumps and Pump Parts
Sponsored by Process Pump and Seal, Inc.

This session explores a “systems approach” to pumps, with the goals of obtaining cost savings, safety, and environmental improvements. The discussion will explore the latest technologies designed to ensure leak-free and longer run times, which include the implementation of engineered processes utilizing vibration analysis, thermography reporting of inconsistent and abnormal bearing temperature inclination, and reverse engineering utilizing the latest camera. From digitizing, to mesh, to model, to prints, to rapid prototyping or patterns, the “systems approach” target is to reduce repetitive failures of critical rotating equipment. Case studies will highlight a variety of different applications, including refineries, fossil and gas generation, clean water, wastewater, air force bases and the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The discussion also will provide insight on how this applies to oil and gas upstream, midstream, and downstream operations.
