Everyone seeks the silver bullet, a singular device capable of solving difficult problems. While methane mitigation is no easy feat, there are numerous providers who will suggest their widget is indeed the silver bullet. They claim the one and only technology will solve your methane problems. Unfortunately, that technology does not exist.
Satellites only see large leaks on clear days, OGI cameras require operators to visit the site making them cost prohibitive for catching leaks early. Continuous monitors can’t pinpoint the source. Although modest reductions are achievable with any device, maximizing the methane abated versus cost involves knowing how available tools fit together into a holistic methane reduction package.
This presentation will show existing detection options: planes, helicopters, drones, satellites, OGI cameras, and continuous monitoring and consider how to deploy these technologies in a way which achieves maximum benefit for the minimum cost. Finally, how can you construct a methane detection system that will answer your specific questions.

Hydrogen and carbon capture and sequestration have emerged as a potential solution to address unprecedented decarbonization demands from investors, customers and governments. The U.S. Department of Energy will soon be reviewing applications and awarding grants for regional Hydrogen Hubs, perhaps including one in Appalachia, while private industry continues to actively explore the generation of hydrogen and its use for industrial, transportation and other uses. Carbon Sequestration and the Path to Commercialization

Underground Injection Control (UIC) wells are designed to inject, dispose, and store injectates in the subsurface. Established methods to permit, design, operate, and monitor UIC wells have established a safe disposal and storage alternative for industry. To meet net-zero goals, these methods can be successfully implemented to insure the safe and secure long-term disposal through carbon capture and sequestration (CCS). The most successful projects will have to navigate and satisfy geologic feasibility, regulatory requirements, and commercial requisites. Geologic criteria include: (1) adequate upper confinement to protect the lowermost Underground Source of Drinking Water (USDW); (2) sufficient storage capacity to sequester the anticipated volume of CO2; and (3) identification and assessment of vertical migration pathways that could compromise permanent storage and potentially threaten the USDW. With geologic requirements satisfied, a stable regulatory framework can be established with advanced efforts to understand the local and state readiness along with early coordination with regulators and stakeholders. These pieces feed into the ever-evolving landscape of policy incentives and advancement of capture technology, making commercialization opportunities available for sustainable CCS programs.

Coming to a Town Near You: Local Government and the Environmental Rights Amendment

This summer, Pennsylvania’s Commonwealth Court threw out Grant Township’s attempt to ban industry activity through the adoption of a Home Rule Charter. This program will provide an update on that case and other continuing efforts to restrict unconventional shale development throughout the Appalachian Basin through local government proceedings. In particular, the presentation will address attempts to use the Pennsylvania Environmental Rights Amendment at the local government level to limit and even ban industry activity. Pipeline Safety in the Biden Administration

The Biden Administration has issued several significant pipeline safety rules since coming to office in January 2021, including new safety standards and reporting requirements for onshore gas gathering lines, as well as new valve installation and rupture detection standards for gas, hazardous liquid, and carbon dioxide pipelines.
