As Texas’s energy landscape continues to evolve, land and energy professionals need clear, fact-based insight beyond headlines and hype. In response to direct member feedback, the AAPL Education Committee developed this Lunch & Learn to provide a neutral, accurate, and practical discussion on ERCOT, renewable energy, and emerging resources shaping the future of Texas energy.

The program opens with a featured presentation by Woody Rickerson, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of ERCOT. He will provide a grounded look at ERCOT’s fuel mix and grid operations—how electricity is generated and dispatched across Texas, what keeps the lights on, what it costs, and how rising demand driven by data centers and population growth is influencing the grid’s future.

Following the keynote, a panel discussion will explore regulatory and legal considerations surrounding geothermal energy—an emerging resource increasingly relevant to AAPL’s historically petroleum-focused membership. Panelists include Jared Ware, CEM®, CGP-G™, GISP® of the Railroad Commission of Texas and Ben Sebree, General Counsel for the Texas Geothermal Energy Alliance. Topics include permitting frameworks, anticipated commission approaches, spacing and allocation concepts, and early legal questions surrounding geothermal as a surface-based interest with dominant-estate characteristics.

The program concludes with an open Q&A session, bringing Mr. Rickerson and the panelists together for a forward-looking conversation on where Texas energy is headed—and what land professionals need to understand as the resource mix and regulatory environment continue to evolve.
