Woodside Energy has reached a significant milestone in its Trion Development offshore Mexico with the start of steel fabrication for the semi-submersible floating production unit (FPU). The steel-cutting ceremony took place in November, 2024, at the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) facility in Ulsan, South Korea. This event marks the start of a multi-year construction effort following the award of the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract to HHI in June 2023. The Trion FPU is central to the development’s progress as Woodside targets first oil production in 2028.

Trion, a greenfield development jointly undertaken by Woodside and PEMEX, is poised to become Mexico’s first deepwater oil production project. Located in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 180 km off the Mexican coast at a depth of 2,500 meters, the development is already more than 15% complete. This milestone underscores the project’s advancement and its potential to tap into untapped energy resources in the region, bolstering Mexico’s presence in the global energy market.
