Workshop Topic

“Don’t Stand So Close to Me” – Parent/Child Well Interactions & Their Economic Impact
Presented by Braden Bowie, Product Manager, Whitson

Abstract

Parent/child well interactions remain one of the most complex and uncertain challenges in modern reservoir development.
This workshop explores practical methods for refining depletion metrics by incorporating both produced volumes and
distance-based decay. Attendees will examine how depletion behavior influences well performance and economic outcomes,
with data and results centered on the Midland Basin.

The discussion also addresses how true vertical depth (TVD) differences affect parent/child relationships, highlighting
the role of frac barriers and their ability to limit fracture propagation—ultimately reducing depletion impact. While
examples focus on the Midland Basin, the principles and methodologies apply across all major basins.

Biography: Braden Bowie

Braden Bowie graduated from the University of Calgary in 2012 and began his career at Apache, working on the Duvernay
play with an emphasis on optimizing development in the retrograde condensate window. In 2017, he relocated to Houston,
where he specialized in Rate Transient Analysis (RTA) and machine learning applications for the Midland Basin.

His work included the development of “Numerical RTA” and applying predictive modeling to enhance the economic
performance of drilling programs. In 2020, Braden became Reservoir Lead for the Midland Basin, where he leveraged machine
learning to guide development strategies focused on wider spacing and larger frac designs.

In July 2025, he joined Whitson to lead development of WhitsonX—a tool designed to optimize DSUs by integrating well
spacing, depletion, and economics into a unified platform.
