8:45 am Deepwater Revival: Changing the Industry by Necessity?
Moderator: Robert Van Kuilenburg, Noble
The last business cycle decimated the deepwater industry in terms of broad business impact throughout the well construction value chain.  As the demand for petroleum increases and deepwater prospects return to active drilling programs, can the industry recover and what will be different?  Drilling contractors, operators, and service providers have changed as has industry so that past practices in terms of re-commissioning rigs and equipment will be difficult. Is the ecosystem of supporting stakeholders still capable or even willing, to design and manufacture drilling rigs or equipment, both offshore and onshore for the next replacement cycle? Do we need to act now not to be too late, or risk being stuck with obsolete designs not capable of supporting more efficient ways of working? Will the nature of cooperation and competition change to reflect new business priorities and technology capabilities? What are the defining aspects of the next five years? What kind of cooperation is needed with industries outside of the drilling industry to keep them engaged?
