SUMMARY:Register Now for the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Permian Basin General Section Luncheon – Oct 20, 2026 – Midland, TX
DESCRIPTION:Enhanced Oil Recovery in Unconventional Reservoirs\nDate: Tuesday, October 20, 2026\nTime: 11:30 AM – Lunch | 12:00 PM – Presentation\nLocation: Summit Petroleum, 3200 Mockingbird Lane, Building One, Midland, TX 79705\nAbout the Event\nJoin the SPE Permian Basin Section for a technical luncheon featuring Dr. Johannes Alvarez, Enhanced Oil Recovery Manager for Chevron Upstream’s Shale and Tight Business and a 2025–2026 SPE Distinguished Lecturer.\nDr. Alvarez will examine how enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technologies can improve hydrocarbon recovery from unconventional reservoirs, reduce production decline, and extend field life. The presentation will explore the differences between conventional and unconventional EOR, highlighting field applications, laboratory findings, recovery mechanisms, and lessons from implementing chemical and gas injection techniques.\nPresentation Overview\nUnconventional reservoirs typically rely on primary depletion, using initial reservoir energy to produce hydrocarbons through complex fracture networks. Although production rates can be high initially, output often declines rapidly before stabilizing at lower levels. EOR technologies offer opportunities to recover additional oil and improve long-term production performance.\nThis presentation will cover two field applications of EOR in unconventional reservoirs:\n\nChemical EOR using surfactants: Explore the application of surfactants in existing horizontal wells and how injected chemicals modify interactions between fluids and reservoir rocks to improve oil recovery.\nHydrocarbon gas EOR: Examine a huff-and-puff approach that recharges depleted formations, reduces oil viscosity, and promotes oil swelling to mobilize additional hydrocarbons.\n\nThe discussion will also compare EOR approaches in conventional and unconventional settings, including laboratory observations, recovery mechanisms, implementation workflows, surveillance methods, and field performance. Analytical techniques and tracer responses will be considered alongside production data and productivity indices to provide an integrated assessment of EOR results.\nLaboratory and field findings have confirmed key recovery mechanisms and measurable production responses. Attendees will gain insight into the opportunities, technical challenges, and timing considerations involved in applying chemical and gas EOR to unconventional reservoirs.\nFeatured Speaker: Dr. Johannes Alvarez\nDr. Johannes Alvarez serves as Enhanced Oil Recovery Manager in Chevron Upstream’s Shale and Tight Business. He brings more than 23 years of experience as a senior reservoir and production engineer, with contributions spanning industry operations, technical research, and development.\nBefore joining his current leadership roles, Dr. Alvarez held positions in Production Engineering and Strategic Planning at Petróleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA). His expertise includes asset development, production, facilities and process engineering, cross-functional pilot programs, and improved and enhanced oil recovery processes across multiple reservoir types.\nDr. Alvarez has authored numerous journal articles and technical papers on EOR and IOR in unconventional and heavy oil reservoirs. His professional and industry leadership includes:\n\n2025–2026 SPE Distinguished Lecturer\nMember of the Texas A&M University Petroleum Engineering Department and the World Oil Editorial Advisory Board\nChairperson of the 2026 SPE Latin American and Caribbean Petroleum Engineering Conference\nForum Chair for the 25th WPC Energy Congress\nCo-Chair of the Unconventional Resources Technology Conference from 2021 to 2025\nCo-Chair of the SPE Midland Basin Energy Conference from 2022 to 2025\nTechnical editor for SPE and other journals, with service on the SPE Reservoir Advisory Committee and as Chairperson of the SPE ATCE Reservoir Engineering Subcommittee\n\nDr. Alvarez holds a PhD in Petroleum Engineering from Texas A&M University, an MSc in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University, and a BSc in Chemical Engineering from Universidad Simón Bolívar.\nEvent Schedule\n\n11:30 AM: Lunch\n12:00 PM: Technical presentation by Dr. Johannes Alvarez\n\nLocation\nSummit Petroleum\n3200 Mockingbird Lane, Building One\nMidland, TX 79705\n
