SUMMARY:Register Now for the SPE Permian Basin Luncheon – January 21, 2026 – Midland, TX
DESCRIPTION:This event reminder is sponsored by: Charter Pipe, leaders in OCTG \n\nLunch & Learn with Dr. Stuart L. Scott\nDate: Wednesday, January 21, 2026\nTime: 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM\nLocation: ConocoPhillips Office – Wolfcamp D Conference Room | Enter from 600 W. Illinois Ave.\nHosted by:\nSociety of Petroleum Engineers – Permian Basin Section\nFeatured Presentation\nEOR Is Gaining New Interest in Unconventional Basins\nSpeaker:\nDr. Stuart L. Scott\nHerald W. Winkler Chair of Petroleum Engineering, Texas Tech University\nPresentation Abstract\nMore than half of U.S. oil production comes from low-permeability sands and shale plays in the Permian, Williston, and Eagle Ford basins, representing an estimated original oil in place of more than 3 trillion barrels. To date, development has relied largely on “drill and drain” methods, resulting in rapid production declines and low recovery factors, leaving over 90% of the oil unrecovered.\nEnhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) is gaining renewed attention as a viable way to boost recovery and extend the productive life of unconventional wells using existing infrastructure. While EOR has historically faced economic and technical challenges, recent advancements are improving feasibility and economics.\nThis presentation explores the growing role of EOR in unconventional reservoirs, with a focus on Huff & Puff techniques including gas injection, surfactant injection, Y-grade injection, gas–surfactant co-injection, and other emerging methods. Attendees will gain insight into current industry efforts, economic comparisons, and approaches that can add reserves at costs below $20 per barrel of oil.\nThe discussion will also address enhancements to artificial lift systems designed to accelerate recovery of injected fluids in gas lift wells. With many horizontal wells aging and approaching plugging and abandonment, the window for EOR implementation is narrowing. Several cost-effective EOR methods, however, are positioned for broader adoption in 2026.\nAbout the Speaker\nDr. Stuart L. Scott is the Herald W. Winkler Chair of Petroleum Engineering at Texas Tech University. Prior to joining TTU, he served as Principal Artificial Lift Advisor for ConocoPhillips in the Permian Basin.\nHis career includes leadership roles at Shell Oil, where he managed deepwater artificial lift technology and served as Global Artificial Lift and Pumping Principal Technical Expert. He has also held faculty positions at Texas A&M University and Louisiana State University and worked for Phillips Petroleum Company.\nDr. Scott is a Distinguished Member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He holds a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering, an M.S. in Computer Science, and a Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Tulsa.\nAbout Upstream Calendar\nUpstream Calendar is the leading platform for events and news in the upstream oil and gas industry.
